Progress on Appeal in Vatican against Archbishop Burke Almost 20 months have passed since ACEE filed a legal action with the Supreme Tribunal (Supreme Court) in the Vatican against Archbishop Raymond Burke in response to his refusal to grant recognition to the ACEE union and allow pastors to commence a negotiation process with their faculties who had duly elected ACEE as their representative. The legal action has moved through several stages already and by the end of April we expect a ruling as to whether this case can ultimately move to the Supreme Tribunal. Technicalities such as whether ACEE or its President are legitimate parties to file such a claim have been debated. Whether Archbishop Burke commited a single or general administrative act when he denied recognition to ACEE is another technical point that is up for debate. That eleven years altogether have passed since ACEE first sought recognition, and the archdiocese continues to ostracize ACEE is not only scandalous, but foolish. When parishes and the archdiocese claim to be struggling financially, cooperation with ACEE (through its affiliation with the Carpenters District Council) could bring cost-saving opportunities to both. |
